How the emissions were avoided

Hillphoenix’s Advanced Second Nature (SN) refrigeration system requires less refrigerant charge than standard refrigeration systems and has a lower leak rate. Typical direct expansion (DX) systems require a charge size of 1100 lb. with an average leak rate of 0.2 (20% recharge annually). Advanced SN systems require a charge size of 600 lb. with an average leak rate of 0.05 (5% recharge annually). Therefore, use of the Advanced SN systems directly enables GHG emissions to be reduced by Hillphoenix customers.

For the Advanced Second Nature systems, an estimated 193,000 metric tonnes of CO2e was avoided in 2012 due to the total systems sold and used from 2007 to 2011.

Assumptions include: 687 Advanced Second Nature System units sold from 2007-2011 (190 additional units sold in 2012)

  • Advanced Second Nature (SN) system requires charge size of 600 with an average leak rate of 0.05 (5% recharge annually).
  • The refrigerant used is R404A, which has a GWP of 3260 according to ASHRAE Standard 34, sourced directly from the WRI GHG Protocol Cross Sector Tools- “GHG Emissions from refrigeration and air-conditioning.”
  • Assuming that systems manufactured in 2007 would be fully functional and require recharge in 2008 – we could estimate cumulative reductions since 2007.
  • In 2012, 190 units sold in 2012 will save customers an additional 64,000 metric tonnes CO2eq going forward in 2013.
