Big Ten Conference
America’s oldest major
collegiate athletics conference can trace its roots to
1895, when
representatives
from seven
universities met
at Chicago’s
Palmer House
Hotel to set academic
standards for intercollegiate
competition. The conference
has since expanded to 14
member institutions, with
2014’s addition of the
University of Maryland and
Rutgers University increasing
its presence in the Northeast.
It’s also opened offices in D.C.
and New York, but continues
to call Chicago home.
